Unique place-as-text curriculum
A place-as-text curriculum means the contemporary culture of a place/city will be the object of study, and will emphasize experiential learning and reflective writing. The exploration of contemporary life occurs by reading and discussing relevant topics to the area as well as numerous excursions and activities aimed at developing interdisciplinary understanding.
A place-as-text course should provide ample opportunities for analyzing and interpreting the ideas, aesthetics, and values that form and inform society. Class assignments should draw focus to experiencing and analyzing the physical and cultural environments that make up a place, and thinking through the way in which these environments represent and construct identities. Background reading may be necessary as a way of understanding a place's cultural identities, as well as consideration of powerful historical events.

Focus on sustainability
"The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests." - United Nations
The Honors College, in partnership with the School of Global Studies, has designed the study away courses in our signature series to highlight the 17 Sustainable Development Goals put forth by the United Nations.
